A DL status check tells you where your learner's licence or driving licence application stands: whether a step is still pending, whether the RTO needs to see you, or whether the licence has been issued. On the official Sarathi portal, the driving licence application status is found by your application number.
This guide shows the official path, what you need, what the one documented status message means, how LL status differs from DL status, and what to do when an application seems stuck. Searches like "parivahan application status", "sarathi application status" and "driving license tracking" all lead to the same Sarathi check. sarathiportal.com is an independent guide and cannot see your application; the status is only on the official site.
What you need for a driving licence application status check
- Your application number. Sarathi generates it when you submit and sends it by SMS. It is also on the printed acknowledgement.
- The state you applied in. Status is checked inside your state's section of Sarathi.
- Your date of birth and the mobile you applied with. Keep them handy for any details or OTP the page asks for.
Save the application number the moment the SMS arrives. Most later steps, including photo and signature upload and the online LL test, start from this number.
How to check DL status on Sarathi parivahan, step by step
- Open the official site. Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in.
- Select your state. Choose the state where you submitted the application.
- Go to Apply Online, then Application Status. This is the path given in the official Sarathi FAQ.
- Enter your application number. Fill in the other details the page asks for and the captcha, then submit.
- Read the result and act on it. If a step such as photo and signature upload is pending, it is done from this same Application Status route.
Application Status is the general status check on Sarathi, so use it for any licence application you hold an application number for, whether a learner's licence, a new DL or a service such as renewal.
What the status messages mean
The official Sarathi FAQ explains one status in detail:
| Status shown | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Application is under scrutiny and processing at RTO Level | The RTO needs to check your documents in person | Visit the RTO for physical document verification and biometrics |
Other messages vary by state and change over time, so we do not list them as official. Read them in the order of the process: application submitted, documents and photo uploaded, fee paid, test booked or taken, licence issued. If a message is unclear, ask your RTO rather than starting a new application.
LL status vs DL status
Learner's licence: under the 2021 rules the LL is issued electronically in Form 3 as soon as you meet the conditions, which include the online tutorial and passing the online test with at least 60 per cent. In the Aadhaar based route described by the national services portal, the LL can be downloaded immediately after you pass. If you passed but cannot download it, check the status with your application number. See learning licence.
Driving licence: after you pass the driving test, the licence is issued by the licensing authority. Use the same Application Status check to follow it. See driving licence online apply for the full process.
DL delivery status and tracking your licence card
How you receive the licence differs by state, so "driving licence delivery status" means different things:
- Rajasthan issues only e-DL from 1 April 2024. There is no card to track; you download the print from Parivahan or get it at an e-Mitra centre.
- Maharashtra sends the DL card by speed post for its faceless DL services such as renewal, duplicate and address change.
- Kerala's Motor Vehicles Department says the DL card is sent within a week.
If your licence is approved but the card has not arrived, ask your RTO for the dispatch details. Meanwhile you can show your licence through DigiLocker or mParivahan, which MoRTH has told States to accept as valid. See driving licence download.
Parivahan status and the mParivahan app
Sarathi is the licence part of parivahan.gov.in, so "parivahan application status" for a licence is the same Sarathi check described above. The official Sarathi state selection page says vehicle, DL and eChallan services should be used only through parivahan.gov.in or the NextGen mParivahan app, and asks applicants to keep their mobile number updated in Vahan and Sarathi.
Vehicle registration status (RC, transfer, number series) is handled by Vahan, not Sarathi, and is outside this guide.
Application stuck or delayed: what to do
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Status says under scrutiny at RTO level | Visit the RTO with your original documents for verification and biometrics. |
| Photo or signature upload pending | Upload through Apply Online, Application Status, using your application number. |
| No test slot available | Online slot booking is not available at every RTO; contact your RTO. |
| Missed the LL test | Rebook through slot booking, subject to available slots. |
| Failed the LL test | Pay the retest fee on Sarathi and book a fresh appointment. |
| Paid twice | Sarathi cannot refund a double payment; contact the RTO or department. |
| Tempted to cancel and reapply | Cancelling is permanent and fees are not refunded. |
| LL about to expire before the DL test | You cannot apply for a DL on an expired LL, so act early and speak to the RTO. |
Sarathi's service menu also includes a grievance option. State helplines published by departments include the Maharashtra faceless LL contact (dytccomp.tpt-mh@gov.in) and the Odisha Transport Commissioner office (+91-671-2507042). In Andhra Pradesh, a news report of 9 October 2026 said a 24-hour control room had been set up for Vahan and Sarathi glitches, with helpline 92816 07001 by call or WhatsApp.
DL status in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Both states are on the Sarathi state list. Telangana moved to Sarathi in 2025, and news reports said the rollout across all RTA offices was due to be completed by 1 September 2025. As of 12 October 2026, the Telangana department's own LL page still linked slot booking to its older system. Andhra Pradesh's transport home page also still links some licence services to an older citizen portal. If you applied on an older system, check the status there or ask your RTA or RTO. See driving licence Telangana and driving licence Andhra Pradesh.

Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, select your state, go to Apply Online, then Application Status, and enter your application number.

Look for the SMS Sarathi sent when you submitted, or the printed acknowledgement. If you have neither, contact the RTO where you applied.

No. Cancelling on Sarathi is permanent, the file is closed and fees are not refunded. Contact your RTO instead.
