If you need a driving licence in Andhra Pradesh, the application now goes through Sarathi, the national licence portal, with Andhra Pradesh chosen as the state. The Transport Department of Andhra Pradesh (aptransport.org) runs the offices and tests. News reports from September 2026 also describe a new AP learner licence test that you can take at home.
Below is what official sources and dated news reports say about AP licences, where the old links still cause confusion, and how to download or track your DL. This site is an independent guide, not the AP Transport Department.
AP transport services moved to Sarathi
According to NIC's Informatics newsletter (July 2025), Andhra Pradesh migrated all transport services across 83 offices to Sarathi between January 2022 and December 2023, and 53 Sarathi services were made completely faceless. AP is on the Sarathi state list, and MoRTH's 2023 review lists Telangana as the only state outside Sarathi at that time.
The aptransport.org home page (last modified 22 October 2025) still links licence services to the older aprtacitizen.epragathi.org site and slot booking to aptransport.in/apcfstonline. We could not confirm whether those systems still process LL or DL applications or when AP stopped using them. If an old link and Sarathi disagree, follow Sarathi or ask your RTO.
AP learner licence test from home (reported news)
As reported by Newsmeter on 29 September 2026, AP started a learner licence test from home on 27 September 2026 through Sarathi's "LLR Online STALL". The report describes it like this:
- Aadhaar e-KYC and facial authentication, with up to 5 attempts
- a laptop or desktop with a webcam, and AI proctoring during the test
- 20 questions, with 12 correct (60 per cent) needed to pass
- at most two candidates per day from one system or IP address
- the digital LL can be downloaded immediately after passing
The report adds that applicants without Aadhaar e-KYC take the test at the RTO. Deccan Chronicle reported on 9 October 2026 that 2,620 people had passed the home test by 8 October 2026.
The 60 per cent pass mark matches the national rule. Practise on our LL mock test and read the learning licence test guide before you start.
Age rules for an AP driving licence
| Vehicle | Minimum age (AP Transport Department) |
|---|---|
| Motorcycle up to 50cc | 16, with parent or guardian consent |
| Motorcycle over 50cc, light motor vehicle (LMV) | 18 |
| Transport vehicles | 20 |
These match the national age limits in Section 4 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A medical certificate in Form 1A is needed for transport vehicles and for applicants over 40. For the vehicle classes, see LMV driving licence and two wheeler licence.
Driving licence online apply in AP and slot booking
The learner licence is valid for 6 months, and you can apply for the permanent DL 30 days after receiving it, before it lapses. Apply on Sarathi with Andhra Pradesh selected, upload documents, pay, and book a driving test slot. On the test day you drive before a Motor Vehicle Inspector.
NIC reported that AP had 10 automated driving test tracks operational as of July 2025. We do not have a verified list of their locations. For AP driving licence slot booking, use the slot booking option on Sarathi; it is not available online at every office. Full steps: driving licence online apply. Test tips: driving test.
AP driving licence download and status
To check status, open Sarathi, choose Andhra Pradesh, then Apply Online and Application Status, and enter your application number. If it says the application is under scrutiny at RTO level, you must visit for document verification and biometrics. More help: DL status.
For an AP driving licence download (including the PDF people often look for), the official digital options are DigiLocker and mParivahan. A MoRTH advisory asked states to accept licences shown through them as valid. See driving licence download.
AP DL renewal and fees
Renewal follows the national window: from one year before expiry to one year after. The central fees are ₹200 for renewal, ₹150 per class for the LL, ₹50 for the LL test, ₹300 per class for the driving test and ₹200 for issue of the DL. We could not verify AP's own fee totals, and states may add user charges, so rely on the Sarathi payment page. Details: driving licence renewal and driving licence fees.
Help with AP transport portal problems
Deccan Chronicle reported on 9 October 2026 that the state's transport minister announced a 24-hour control room for Vahan and Sarathi glitches, with a helpline you can call or message on WhatsApp: 92816 07001. As this comes from a news report, confirm it on the department's site if you can.
