Parivahan Punjab is the usual search for anyone who wants a learner licence or driving licence from the Punjab Transport Department. The applications themselves are made on Sarathi at sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, where you first choose Punjab, then the service you need.
Sarathi Portal Guide is independent and is not connected to the Punjab Transport Department. We explain the Punjab-specific points we could verify, warn you about one outdated rule you may still see online, and link to our national guides for each step.
Learning licence apply online Punjab: the test from home
The Tribune reported that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched an online learner licence facility on 14 June 2022, letting applicants take the LL on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in from home. The same report said Suvidha centres remain an option for those who prefer help in person.
The Punjab Transport Department hosts two documents for this route: a user manual titled "Learner's Licence Application using Aadhaar Authentication" and a flow chart for the faceless LL application. Both are linked in the sources below if you want the department's own walkthrough.
Central rules set the core of the test everywhere: an online safe-driving tutorial and an objective test within seven days of applying, with at least 60 per cent correct to pass. The LL is then issued electronically and is valid for 6 months. Read our learning licence guide and try the LL mock test before you start.
Age rules as Punjab Transport publishes them
| Vehicle | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| Motorcycle of up to 50cc | 16 |
| Any motor vehicle in a public place (general rule) | 18 |
| Transport vehicle (subject to Section 18) | 20 |
These follow Section 4 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, which the 2019 amendment did not change. Applicants for a transport vehicle also need a Form 1A medical certificate.
Watch out: the old validity rule on Punjab pages
The Punjab Transport driving licence page still shows the pre-2019 validity rule (non-transport licences valid for 20 years or until age 50, transport licences for 3 years). That rule has been replaced.
Under Section 14 as amended in 2019, the current validity is:
| Licence and age when issued or renewed | Valid for |
|---|---|
| Non-transport, before age 30 | Until you turn 40 |
| Non-transport, age 30 to under 50 | 10 years |
| Non-transport, age 50 to under 55 | Until you turn 60 |
| Non-transport, 55 or older | 5 years |
| Transport vehicle | 5 years |
Punjab driving licence online apply after the LL
Apply for the permanent DL on Sarathi before your LL expires; an expired LL cannot be used. State transport pages such as Odisha say the DL can be applied for 30 days after the LL. Upload documents, pay the fee and book a driving test slot where online booking is offered. If you fail the re-test, the 2019 amendment requires a remedial driver training course.

Driving licence fees in Punjab, including the heavy licence
We could not verify Punjab's own charges. The central Rule 32 fees are below; Punjab may add service or user charges, which appear on the Sarathi payment page.
| Service | Central fee |
|---|---|
| Learner licence, per class | ₹150 |
| LL test or retest | ₹50 |
| Driving test, per class | ₹300 |
| Issue of DL | ₹200 |
| Adding another class to a DL | ₹500 |
| Renewal | ₹200 |
A 4 wheeler and a two-wheeler are separate classes, so each carries its own LL and test fee. A heavy licence is a transport class: same per-class fees, minimum age 20 and Form 1A. See our driving licence fees and heavy licence guides.
Driving licence application status Punjab and online check
To follow an application: on Sarathi, select Punjab, click Apply Online, then Application Status, and enter your application number. A status reading "Application is under scrutiny and processing at RTO Level" means you need to visit for document verification and biometrics.
To check an existing licence, the official route uses your DL number and date of birth. The Sarathi menu also has a DL extract option. Guides: DL status and online DL check.
How to renew, replace or download a Punjab DL
Renew from one year before expiry to one year after; after that, a driving test and a late fee of ₹300 plus ₹1,000 for each year or part apply. Renewal can be filed with any licensing authority in the state. A duplicate DL costs ₹400 under the central schedule. For a digital copy, DigiLocker and mParivahan are accepted under a MoRTH advisory.
